I built mine just after XMas and it is still considered tops. I recommend a e6600 cpu with 2gig ram 800mhz. I have a P5B board from asus (it is compatible with quad core and extreme core cpu's if you want to upgrade). I have a raptor drive (74gig 10k rpm) as the main drive and a secondary drive sata. I recommend 2 dvd burners, skip the floppy drive, you do not need that anymore. Antec case and 450 ps does the job. Depending on your budget, I would recommend 8800 nvidia card but if you need to cut, I usually do it here as the cards go down in price much faster then most components. I have a 7600 Vidoe card and still does a great job at gaming. Monitor is too personal to go there, its really a matter of opinion but widescreen is very popular now but not that great for gaming yet.
