Todd, I'm sure you noticed but just in case you didn't you can get on msdn and download Windows 7 Beta. I'm thinking about doing it and putting it on one of my old machines at home to play around with.

LOL just saw this looking through the msdn download list. I noticed they already had an update for Windows 7 and was like...wtf it just came out yesterday. Check it out hah.
MP3 files When MP3 files are added (either manually or automatically) to either the Windows Media Player or the Windows Media Center library, or if the file metadata is edited with Windows Explorer, several seconds of audio data may be permanently removed from the start of the file. This issue occurs when files contain thumbnails or other metadata of significant size before importing or editing them. To avoid this, take the following steps:

It's been out since November? There's 3 security hotfixes for it already too. yes I've been waiting for building 7000+ to surface on MSDN. I' joined the developers blog for windows 7. I've heard really really good things about it actually. It's spose to be really good. I personally have high expectations for it.
I actually really love Vista - but thats b/c I know my way around a windows PC inside and out. I can't speak for others that just want a home computer. I know a lot of ppl hate Vista though. I just really hope they dont make it into a "toy" for junior to play with. I want a rock solid business level OS that I can play games on when I need to. You know?

so ive got windows 7 build 7000 installed on a spare Dell Latitude D630. Its a dual core 2.4 with 3gb of mem and a 32gb ssd.
Ummm it took forever to install at least twice as long as vista. I didnt time it but should have. It got every device driver installed except biometric coprocessor. The OS is very vista like obviously, but more clean and classy than toyish and fun. The taskbar and quicklauch are very streamlined and slim - but still very useful. Information is easy to find and everything seems to be in order. Wireless works great so far. Reboot times are faster than XP or vista (but that could be due to my SSD) The install is a hefty 9gb which surprised me. Using all defaults Windows 7 started up with 33 processes which again surpised me because vista uses about 60. Memory usage was lower than vista ~550mb, its at 602mb with a couple programs installed, ie8, and antivirus running for the past 2 hrs.
Ill try to keep a running update on this thread as im sure some ppl will be interested in it. The best way to describe it is "Vista on hydroxycut"

I just checked the eventvwr and ive rebooted 3 times. The reboot times have been 16s, 23s, and 15s. I have a similar laptop with vista on it and they are in the mid 30s to low 40s normally.

The download links are active again. Apparently the beta is free to use for 30 days w/o an activation key, and there is a command that will extend the 30 days to 120 days. (slmgr -rearm) http://lifehacker.com/5127558/window...n-product-keysEdit: If you do choose to use that command, be sure to do it at the end of 30 days. So once you reach 30 days of use, issue that command in an Admin prompt, and enjoy 30 more days. You can use that command 3 times, giving you 120 days total FYI if you can't get a key. I haven't tried this yet but we'll see.

That worked in Vista too so yes that will work here. I might be able to get multiple keys though.
Again like Vista there is one DVD to install from for all versions. You can choose which version upon install. I chose business since thats the one I'll be using.

Btw, I run vista (and loves it). What do you guy use to block internet access. I used to work with Zonealarm and Lockdown2000, both fuck up vista really hard.
Suggestion ? (And make that free plz or hackable :P)

This for the kiddies I assume? Mine aren't big enough to have to worry about that yet but doesn't vista (maybe it is only certain versions) come with parentals controls that can block the internet? I know at Best Buy I had to fix a few machines where the parental controls just borked and a repair install was the only fix =/

Oh no, it's for me. I did install Avid Liquid to play with some movies and it keeps trying to reach internet. Can't use the software unless I unplug the net. Which ain't this practical.
Maybe I'm a noob and vista has some feature that already does that ? Having kids tends to get geeks a lot dummer .
