I don't have a whole lot of money to build a new system right now, so I thought I'd drop in a graphic card upgrade to get me through this year's games.
Current specs: Asus A8R MVP socket 939 mobo Radeon Xpress 1600 chipset 2GB DDR400 Athlon X2 3800+ Radeon HD2600 PRO
I was thinking about getting a Radeon 5670 1GB, which is right about in my price range ~$100. Any recommendations on brand or card? Do you think BC2 would run on this box with settings on lowest?

I would think that it would run fine. You can crank it down all the way to run on DX 9 so I would assume if you could play BF2 that BC2 wouldn't add a whole lot of extra fps lag. But Nano would probably be the best bet to compare against because I think Nano has the oldest machine so far and was talking about fps issues before.

I would recommend getting another 2GB of RAM if you can as well. DDR400 shouldn't be too expensive right now.

I'm trying to avoid buying parts that wouldn't be usable in the next rig, so if I can avoid buying more RAM for this machine it would be preferable. Any card brands to avoid? I haven't bought hardware in a while

If it just uses DDR400 RAM, I may have an extra gig of ram you can have on the cheap. Just pay the shipping.
