My family's plan is almost done so we're looking to get new phones and BB's are running around $50 with a new plan. I don't think I'll have internet coverage in the plan so that functionality will be pretty much useless I guess. I really only use my phone for calling and texting. GPS would be nice though. Anyone have one? Which one do you recommend?

I'm pretty sure you at the very least have to have some kind of basic internet plan for the BlackBerry. You can't have one without it, at least not with Sprint or Verizon I know. Verizon charges at least a basic $20 to $30/mo fee (can't remember exactly) for just their Internet and Email package. The functionality that you typically can leave off is the BES service (I believe that is the acronym). BES is the enterprise service that lets you sync up your phone to the blackberry mail servers (if you company has that capability). So that is usually optional.
I have the 8830 through work and I really like it. Only prob is it doesn't have a camera. If you want a camera I think you're pretty much stuck with the Curve or the Tour. However, at least with Sprint, the Tour can't be tethered to a laptop for internet service according to one of my coworkers who went round and round with the people at Sprint about it. So she dropped the Tour and got the Curve and has been really happy with it. Another BB I would stay away from is the Storm. My wife has it and its slow as shit when it comes to response time when you touch the screen. The whole thing is buggy sometimes and seems to require a reboot pretty frequently.
The only thing I don't like about my BB is I can't figure out how to get apps to install to my memory card instead of the internal memory. It seems like I don't have very much space at all for new apps although I have some beefy ones on there like gmail chat and such.

I am with AT&T. The iPhones do seem nicer but they are also more expensive.

I would die to get an iPhone. I would also die if I signed up for AT&T phone plans. So I just stick with my shitty phone and go about my biz.

You can get an 8GB 3G refurbished phone for $50 I think that is CHEAP! The data plan is also $10 cheaper a month if I remember correctly.

Iknow this thread is old, but BB's suck, so do iPhones, get an android based phone. If you sync with an exchange server, then get the touchdown application for it as well.

Seriously, my BB gets the job done for work but it sucks for personal/non-work stuff. Almost nothing I want to download has a BB app, or if it does, it is extremely shitty compared to the Android and iPhone. Mel has a Storm and it sucks ass too and that is supposed to be their "entertainment" phone.

Yeah BB needs to get with the times. At least give me HTML email wtf? They strip it all out to text based, can't view embedded images, and if you want to view a document forget it. try to view a pdf, word doc, jpeg, whatever on a BB, it can't. When you zoom in it gets all blurry, it can't reimage.
